When the issues faced by Grandparents bringing up their grandchildren and those grandparents denied any relationship with their grandchildren were identified in the late 1990s, OPSO in conjunction with other Seniors’ groups established the first Grandparent support groups.
The Council of Grandparents or COGs as it become known was an initiative of Older People Speak Out from a forum they held in 2002 around issues for grandparents and kin carers of grandchildren. A working party was established with representation from a number of older people’s organisations as well as some of the professional services including Centrelink.
Early in 2004, the group decided to formalise the organisation into a body that could move towards incorporation as a charitable entity.
As the Council is unfunded, Connect the Coast Assoc. was approached to auspice the organisation until such time as they could afford the costs attached to operating as a public entity.
In 2012 Council was Incorporated and has changed its name to The Queensland Council of Grandparents or QCOGS, established its own website www.qldcogs.com and OPSO continues to be represented on Council.
