Activities

SPEAKOUTS

We conduct 'Speakouts' through out the year. They are a form of action research on a specific issue. They include about 30 to 40 people who during the first section are invited to discuss the issue... what is wrong, what needs to be changed.

In the second half of the Speakout they are encouraged to come forward with suggestions for solutions; and in the third section we discuss how the solutions can best be implemented.

DEBATES

OPSO members are available for debates on air or at functions.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

Members are available as conference and function speakers on any of the issues relating to older people.

MEDIA

OPSO members are available to run media campaigns for organisations to help publicise their issues or function.

We are also available to make videos to support any campaign on a social issue... e.g. at present we are making a training video on seniors and police with the Qld Police. We recently worked on a video produced by QUT on training nurses on the nature of seniors today

Wisdom

When I grow old
I’ll hug dead trees,
Caress dry streams {on aching knees}
Where once they tumbled safe and free
And unpolluted to the sea –
When I grow old.

When I grow old
I’ll wonder why
The rain has vanished from the sky,
And all the straw-brown earth is dry,
Why politicians legislate
For every crisis just too late –
When I grow old.

When I grow old
Why then I’ll know
Where all the northern rivers go.
I’ll pipe them down to us below
And turn the sea to water flow –
When I grow old.

When I grow old
And this is done,
I’ll take a journey to the sun
And link its power for everyone,
And that’s how every car will run.
Things will be cheap, life will be fun –
When I grow old.

When I grow old
I’ll take the moon
And dream within its soft cocoon.
I’ll wonder why age came so soon:
Inside I know its still high noon –
Now I am old.
